Project Facts

Ideal cooperated with famed designer, Matsubara for this project. The scheme for a traditional bookstore company was enhanced with innovative design strategies. A series of multi-functional furniture provided a flexible solution which allowed a number of layout variations, all with a different ambience.

The bookstore occupies four levels of the building with a double escalator running through the levels. The 1st floor interior is fitted with reconstituted granite flooring and pre-cast concrete slabs with gaps that create a translucent effect of the services above. Colour coding was used to give each floor its uniqueness. The shiny white surfaces resemble flowing water and project an exchange of media. Standard safety exits are arranged on this floor and the walls are fitted with frosted glass, allowing space for mounting posters.

The space planning on the 2nd floor features a range of brown, boxlike bookshelves for books focused on politics, economics and other formal practices. Mirror polished stainless steel is used to cover the columns, visually removing the obstruction for a spatial continuity. The 3rd  floor consists of cultural and children books, thus a sense of energy has been added to this vibrant area through a range of colourful and curvy green bookshelves. The furniture is placed to form a smart dynamic space in red for science and technology books on the 4th floor.

The multifunctional band was used throughout all floors, providing for both bookshelves and seating. Utilizing a bright palette, modern shapes and more tactile materials, Ideal was able to reintroduce a more youthful and invigorated bookstore to the Beijing market.
